Furnace Not Working?

If your furnace is doing any of the following, shut it off and call a service professional immediately:
- Strong gas smell while running
- Booming sounds or rough lighting
- Burning electrical smells
When your furnace isn't working there are several things you can check to get an idea of what might be wrong.
Most modern furnaces have a control board in the blower compartment. Most of these controls display error codes. Generally the error codes will consist of either a single or multiple light flashing some number of times. Most furnaces have a sticker on one of the door panels that indicate what they error codes mean. Some of the more common error codes are:

Ignition Failure
This error code means the furnace didn't light correctly. It is usually caused by a dirty sensor or a broken ignitor.
Limit Open
This indicates that the furnace got too hot. This is usually caused by plugged filters or a blower motor failing to run.
Pressure Switch
Can be caused by a blocked hose port on the induced draft motor housing, a motor failing, or blockage in the flue/intake pipes.
Modern furnaces are generally very safe, however, long periods without maintenance increase the risk of malfunction. It is always recommended to have a service professional check your equipment regularly. Well-maintained HVAC systems last longer and run more efficiently. If you need a service call or have questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.
